  • Charging Congress with suppression of ‘‘true information’’ on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, senior JD(U) leader George Fernandes and BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi today demanded that government come out with the reasons for rejecting the Mukherjee Commission report.

Sharing the dais at the BJP headquarters, the two leaders said that the probe had ‘‘conclusively shown that Bose did not die in any plane crash on August 18, 1945.’’ The findings, therefore, according to them, ‘‘raise the most crucial question - As there was no plane crash, what happened to Netaji?’’

The two NDA leaders said the rejection of the report, instead of resolving the controversy, had kept it alive. They said, ‘‘Clearly, the Congress-led government has a lot of explaining to do to the nation about the fate of Netaji and their disinterestedness in bringing out real facts about Netaji’s disappearence.’’

‘‘The nation will not allow the truth to be suppressed,’’ they said, contending that the reasons for rejection ‘‘are as contemporary as they are rooted in the past.’’

‘‘The deception continues from the Nehruvian era to this day of Pranab Mukherjee, one of the strongest votaries of Netaji’s death,’’ they added.

Recalling that NDA government had set up the inquiry following a Kolkata High court directive as well as a unanimous resolution by the West Bengal Assembly, Fernandes and Joshi said the commission rejected the story that Netaji had died in a plane crash or that the ashes lying at Renkoji temple in Japan were his.

The report has said that the air crash story was cooked up by the Japanese military and Netaji’s close aide Habib-u-Rehman to ensure Netaji’s escape from the approaching Allied Forces. The ashes of a Japanese soldier, Ichiro Okura, were passed off as Netaji’s. The report said Netaji was headed for Soviet Union, from where he was expected to continue the Independence movement.
