Never too late: PU tightens security, restricts visitors

In its quest to completely revamp security on the campus,Panjab University has chalked out certain plans to restrict the entry of outsiders.

Visitors are now being allowed entry only through Gate Number 1 (PGI side) and that too after taking a token. This has to be returned while leaving the campus, which is also restricted to the same gate.

Only vehicles with university stickers are being allowed entry from other gates. Those not having a sticker will now have to deposit the registration certificate (RC) of their vehicle or their licence with the security personnel at the time of entry.

Prof Naval Kishore,Dean Students Welfare (DSW),said: “Depending on the number of security personnel,we have restricted the entry of outsiders to Gate Number 1. This would keep us informed about the number of visitors coming in and this way,we will also be able to regulate the entry of outsiders.”

As part of its heightened security measures, vehicles entering the campus are also being checked regularly and those with any kind of weapon are being asked to deposit the same with the security personnel at the gate.

These measures have been adopted after the campus witnessed a number of violent incidents recently, most of them involving outsiders. The security plans were in the pipeline for long and are finally being implemented.

The university, meanwhile, also plans to hire around 50 security personnel taking the total number of guards on the campus to hundred. Students, however, seem to have little faith in the security system of the university. NSUI president Nitin Goyal said: “The arrangements have created confusion for many individuals who are not aware of the new decisions. Nothing has been conveyed formally to the students and at least a public notice should have been released by the university.”

Besides students and visitors, there are many others who are not too happy and convinced with the reviewed security. “Though I am teaching in the university, the security personnel do not allow me to enter because I don’t have the university sticker on my vehicle. At least the faculty should have been informed of the changed arrangements,” said a professor at the university.
