Uttar Pradesh is developing a park named New Ambedkar Park by reclaiming 22 acres of land along the Gomti river, between Gomti barrage and the new eight lane bridge. The main feature of the park would be a stone stage, spread over 494 square metres. The park would be used for cultural programmes and small gatherings.
The estimated expenditure is Rs 300 crore,of which over Rs 22 crore was spent just on filling the reclaimed land to bring it up to the level of the eight lane bridge.
The reinforced cement concrete stage, with a height of 32 metres, will be covered with sandstone and will have Makrana marble inside. The stage, with an estimated cost of Rs 14 crore, will open towards the river. The park, surrounded by a boundary wall of 1,800 metres will have two stone entrance gates. Statues of dalit icons will be installed in the park. About 10 per cent of the park will be green space, while the rest will be covered with stone.
Initially, there was a move to build a five star hotel at the spot and the stet changed its land use from green and open to commercial in August 13,2009. After a PIL was filed in the Allahabad HC challenging the land use,the government,on December 31 last year, decided to retain the land as green and open.
