New Army cantts in Naxal-hit areas being considered

  • Determined to take the Naxal menace head-on, the Government is actively considering setting up brigade headquarters or Army cantonments in interior areas of Naxal-affected states.

Government sources told The Indian Express that the new military cantonments would act as a deterrent and there are plans that these brigade-size formations would also train paramilitary forces before their induction in anti-Naxal operations. Situated inside Naxal-dominated areas, these cantonments would have an advance landing ground that could be used for troop deployment by air in the event of operations.

The Home Ministry has already discussed these plans with the Defence Ministry and the two are at present working on locations of new cantonments to be set up in Naxal-hit states. While Ranchi already has an Army division headquarters, there are plans to have brigade-level headquarters in Koraput (Orissa) and Jagdalpur (Chhattisgarh).

While Defence Minister A K Antony is not in favour of armed forces getting involved in the Naxal fight, the Government is backing Home Minister P Chidambaram’s assessment that the Naxalite military strength had been underestimated by the Centre.

The idea behind new Army cantonments is to build future capacities and instil confidence among the local population. Following the Chhattisgarh ambush in which an SP was among 37 police personnel killed, the highest levels of the government even debated the use of armed helicopters and dropping special troops behind Naxal lines.

Unfortunate DecisionBy: k_ram | 22-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward The sixth central pay commission had recommended strongly the lateral induction of Armed Forces personnel to PMFs. Mr Chidambaram should go into the files of the MHA to find out how this recommendation was throttled and by whom. Any loss of human life is sad, especially if the loss is due to violence. That not withstanding, from the report it appears that the Government is shaken up because of the loss of an SP level officer. Does that mean the lower ranks, the constabulary or for that matter the Army are cannon fodder? The Governments of Orissa, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar must establish command centres staffed by the administrators and the police from the very top. Granted that the problem is political too but then administrative inputs also form a major part. Enforce accountability on civil bureaucracy and police. Reports suggest that IPS officers are not keen to head counter insurgency units and all action is left at the ASI levels and lower. Shameful, if it is true!?

THE ARMY TO THE RESCUE ONCE AGAIN???By: Suresh Nair | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Once again the army has to rescue the inept and bungling police and the bureaucracy?? They shall obviously do what is told to them with diligence and at a tremendous loss of life and comforts whilst the others (Bureaucracy and the IPS) will have fun and win awards and also get more pay and perks??Once again when the ASrmy will request to celeberate their wins against the Naxals the Congress will not allow it as the communists will be hurt and anyaway this was not a WAR??What a way to run the security of the country
Who bears the resposibity of the failure ?? Govt or people of IndiaBy: Wonderer | 21-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward There is no will to do a analysis of why India is facing this situation. GoI knows whey can call army for the cleanup and that's their solution and people who were in power who failed to do execute their responsibility will just retire in peace.AND THAT MAKE SURES HISTORY KEEPS ON REPEATING ITSELF AGAIN AND AGAIN IN INDIA.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGHBy: BABUJI | 20-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward India has left these couple of thorns to fester in it's side for a long time. Now the time has come to take the battle to them rather then allow them to strike at will. Naxalites and Maoists should be addressed now and wiped off completely for India to have any peace internally. Regions infested with them should be dotted with Army units and fumigated surgically without any questions asked. Unfortunately due to India's pussy footing in the past, it has to fight the Naxalits, Maoists, home grown jihadists, terrorists, and also take on any threats from Pakistan or China all at the same time.India has the money, technology, manpower and the will to take up the challenge.
