New blinking traffic lights confuse commuters

In order to keep the flow of traffic steady on Madhya Marg, the green signal to turn right goes off after 45 seconds. It blinks ten times before it goes off. However, for a commuter, it seems as if there is a problem with the light.

"I thought that the light is not working properly, so I crossed. But I did not realise that the lights went off and the traffic from the opposite side of the road started moving," said Shweta Sharma, a resident of Manimajra who was on her way to her workplace in Industrial area.

"Twice I have nearly had an accident. I did not realise that the green signal towards right was going off when it was blinking. I thought that the lights were not working properly and maybe there is a problem in the light point," said Deepak Shekhawat a resident of Sector 27.

Kamal Deep, DSP (Traffic), visited the transport light point as per directions from Maneesh Chaudhary, Superintendent of Police (Traffic), who said that this problem had come to their notice for the first time while talking to Newsline.

The problem started a few weeks back when the traffic lights were synchronised. "A person who follows the speed limit between 45 to 55 km per hour starting from Traffic light point gets a green signal on all the light points till Housing Board Light point," said Maneesh Chaudhary.

However, for the ones who have to turn right, the signals have changed. "I can understand the problem. People are not able to decipher the blinking of the green signals indicating the right turn. We will have to make a change as to how the signals should change," said DSP (Traffic) inspecting the spot.

Tenders have also been floated to change the glass covers of the traffic signals on Madhya Marg. A Traffic police officer said: "Once these glasses are changed, the signals will be more clear."
