A new comprehensive insurance scheme is being prepared for farmers to ensure guaranteed damage cover,Agriculture Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil said here on Friday.

Patil was speaking after inaugurating Agrovision 2011,a farm expo organised by BJP president Nitin Gadkari. Swabhiman Shetkari Sanghana chief Raju Shetty and former Union Minister M K Anna Patil were the guests of honour.

Patil said the new scheme would cost about Rs 1,200 crore and Central help would be taken to implement it. “It will ensure 60 per cent cover against damages.” He criticised the agriculture universities for not developing any measure to prevent farmers’ suicide.

Speaking on the occasion,Gadkari said,“Like all other banks,one-time settlement of loans should also be done in case of land development banks.” Gadkari and Shetty concurred in saying that the state government should propose a separate budget for farm sector on the lines of one proposed by the Karnataka government.
