New job option for financially weaker strata: Bouncers

He had never been to school, thus job options were restricted for Anil Kamble, whose father is a construction worker and mother a homemaker. His earning was enough for a hand-to-mouth existence. That was till he began pumping iron at a local gym for about 6-7 hours a day. In 2007, he got the job of a bodyguard for a leading city businessman for Rs 5,000 a month. After working for two years, he decided to be a bouncer and his income jumped to around Rs 500 a day. In 2010, he started his own company Star Bouncers. Out of 50 boys working for Star Bouncers, 40 are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The profession of a bouncer, says Kamble, has created job opportunities for youth from financially weaker families. "They just have to invest a little money and time at a local gym to get a good physique. On every event that I do, my employees earn Rs 600 to Rs 800 a day for an eight-hour work. Besides, they stay away from habits like drinking, smoking and guthka as it affects their physique," he says.

Educated till Class X, Babu Vasant Nanavare (21) got enrolled at a modest local gym that charged him just Rs 300 a month around two years ago. After working out rigorously for over a year, he built a body that fetched him the job of a bouncer for a city-based builder. "We are a family of five members and since my father worked as a Class C worker in the Railways, his income was not sufficient for us," says Nanavare, who now earns Rs 10,000 a month.

At Mankar's Bouncers that started two years ago, there are over 100 bouncers and over 80 per cent of them hail from economically weaker backgrounds. On an average, the company does over 15 events in a month, wherein the bouncers get around Rs 800 a day. When the bouncers have to travel to various venues with celebrities, they get Rs 1,000-Rs 1,200 per day.
