Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court S S Nijjar on Friday assured the president of the Bar Association he would initiate the process for appointment of judges for filling up vacant posts from next week. This comes after Amjad Ali, the president of the Bar Association, met the Chief Justice along with the vice-president and the general secretary of the lawyers’ group.
According to Ali, the Chief Justice has already recommended nine names to the Supreme Court for appointment as judges during the cease-work that began a few days ago.
Ali said Justice Nijjar told the Bar Association that it can recommend names for the appointment of judges.
Legal circles feel the ongoing cease-work will be called off on Monday in the review meeting to be held on that day. The Bar Association had decided on October 30 to go for a week-long cease-work for appointment of judges to fill up the vacant posts. The Bar Association also highlighted the other issue of alleged misdemeanor of a few judges towards advocates in the court room.
On Friday, Ali told the Bar members about the talks he held with the Chief Justice on November 4 where Chief Justice requested them to call off the cease-work.
The Bar Association had, however, turned down the request of the Chief Justice.
