The newly appointed Mayor,Rajni Abbi, visited Rohini zone on Wednesday to review the sanitation situation. She also announced her plan of visits to different areas of the city over the next 10 days. This, she said, was an effort to nab erring officials and sanitation contractors.

After her visit to Rohini,Abbi said she found several cases of cleanliness not being maintained. “I have spoken to them (contractors and officials concerned) and issued directions. Sometimes contractors don’t bother about keeping their areas clean since they feel they will not be caught. Therefore,I have decided to conduct surprise visits,” she said.

Abbi added that she has written to the Commissioner of the MCD asking him to inform the deputy commissioners of all 12 zones of the MCD about her visits. “If needed,I will visit all the 272 wards of Delhi and check the situation. The MCD runs on the money paid by the general public and so they should at least have a garbage-free neighbourhood,” she said.

Abbi will also review MCD’s door-to-door garbage collection system, which was introduced a few month’s ago. Currently, the system is in place in Civil Lines and Rohini zones and parts of Dwarka.

Abbi also sought detailed report of permissions granted to various agencies, including individuals, for road digging during the last four years and restoration work carried out by the MCD thereafter. On Monday, she sent a communiqué in this regard to Engineer-in-Chief Ravi Dass asking him to provide a specified compilation.

“So many times, other agencies dig up MCD roads to lay cables and it open after their work is done. This creates a lot of problems for the general public,” she said.
