With confusion surrounding the recent compensation package announced by the state government for Singur farmers, the farming community is unable to comprehend its components. Basudeb Das, a resident of Beraberi village, said: “We do not know what the government is actually offering through this package. We expect somebody from the government explain to us everything.”
Das had one-and-a-half acre land in the project area but had not accepted the compensation for the land that was acquired for the project. “This government has no credibility. I was a staunch supporter of the CPM but they snatched my land,” he said.
Similar sentiment was echoed by other Beraberi farmers, who held a rally protesting against the package on Sunday.
Madan Das said: “The package is confusing. We cannot even understand whether it’s fair or not. We will not stop our protest till everything becomes clear to us.” He also had one-and-a-half acre land inside the project area and had not accepted the compensation.
In a related development, the Krishi Jomi Raksha Committee led by Trinamool Congress carried out a procession on Sunday that started at Beraberi and ended at Sanapara. Rabindranath Bhattacharya, Singur MLA and one of the members of the 4-member committee that was set up by the government to settle the land issue, was present at the rally.
He said: “ We asked the government to return the land that is lying unused within the factory but they turned down our demand.” Expressing his dissatisfaction with the new package, he said, “This package offers nothing. This is not something we have been fighting for the last three years.”
