There’s good news for commuters who get lost on the radial roads around Connaught Place. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has put up new signages for roads in the area that are more clearly visible.
New signages were earlier placed in the Chanakyapuri area, pointing out for the embassies located there.
The new ones are made of stainless steel, with clear white lettering on a green background that will be visible during the night as well as during foggy weather, something that the older signages failed to do. The base of the signages is made of concrete.
The upgrade work is part of the government’s endeavour to make the roads more beautiful before the Commonwealth Games next year. Apart from 28 corridors leading to the Games venues, 85 roads have been identified for the new signages and work is going to be complete by June next year. The spots and corridors were selected earlier this year. Tenders will be invited in three packages of Rs 4 crore each.
The new signages will also identify roundabouts, provide information and point to important buildings.
The first stage of the work involved putting up signages on the Games routes, most of which is already complete. Since all major central government offices are locatesd in the NDMC area, there was “an ardent need to get fresh signages made”, officials said.
It was felt that the old signages did not meet international standards, they added. Also, visiting foreign delegates usually spend a lot of time in the NDMC areas.
