A new Supreme Court wing adjacent to the existing complex will be constructed on the land where the countrys first amusement park,Appu Ghar, was located. Construction would begin in the first week of October, sources said.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has given the contract to build the new building to a Mumbai-based firm. The foundation for the complex on a 12-acre plot is expected to be laid by Thursday.
The preliminary estimate for the project is around Rs 884 crore.
The land was handed over to the CPWD in 2008 after Appu Ghar was shut down in February that year.
Construction of the basic structure is going to take 30 months. We will then float tenders for work on the interiors and other facilities, a CPWD official said.
An underpass will be constructed once the wing is ready to connect the old Supreme Court complex with the new one.
The complex will have seven blocks with four to seven floors. It will house a library, administration centre, felicitation centre,auditorium-cum-conference hall and a conservation centre comprising a museum and exhibition hall. Preserved records of famous Supreme Court verdicts and cases will be kept in that hall. There will also be chambers for lawyers, the official said.
There will be a three-level underground parking lot to accommodate around 1,800 vehicles.
After Appu Ghar, which ran for over two decades since its inauguration in November 1984,was closed and the land was selected for the Supreme Court expansion project, the CPWD appointed a consultant in 2010 to build an eco-friendly building for the countrys top court.
The underground connectivity between the existing and the new complex will be built in such a way that even vehicles will be able to ply on it. For pedestrians, there will be footpaths on both sides of the underpass.
The road near Pragati Maidan, where the underpass will be made, might have to be partially closed for some time, officials said.
