After the successful installation and use of High Voltage Distribution System (HVDS) in Sector 52, the UT Electricity department has decided to extend it to all colonies in the city. The rehabilitation colony, Sector 25, will be the first where the low-tension distribution system will be replaced.
According to officials of the Electricity department, the new system will solve problems of low voltage, put an end to ‘kundi’ connections and help reduce technical losses to the bare minimum.
The Rs 2.06 crore plan has got the nod of UT Administrator General S F Rodrigues (Retd).
The department has already started construction work for installing the high voltage system in the colony. The tentative expense for setting up the system in 16 colonies dotting the landscape of Chandigarh which house more than 25,000 dwelling units is also being worked out.
“As and when a colony is rehabilitated under the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme, it will be provided with HVDS. It will not only stop ‘kundi’ connections but also prevent loss of revenue which is estimated at three to five per cent of the total annual revenue,” said Surinder Pal, UT Chief Engineer.
The Superintending Engineer of the Electricity department added that small-sized distribution transformers of 200 KVA capacity will be installed to ensure that any disruption in power supply affects only the minimum area.
The distribution system will be completed by next year, he said.
