New Year celebrations cancelled as city mourns gangrape victim’s death

Mahila Morcha, the women's wing of BJP, protested at the Sector 17 plaza wearing black bands. The protestors also wrote messages on a banner. Party president Sanjay Tandon, expressing regret at the incident, stated that the government should make stricter laws to deal with such cases. He said that the country was in shock over the incident. Other groups protested there as well.

Former BJP councillor Ram Lal led a candle light march in Ramdarbar Colony where the residents of the area participated. The residents took an oath not to tolerate such incidents. They appealed to the government to make stricter laws. Residents in different sectors took out protest marches. These included the residents of Sector 40 and those of Sector 20.

Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, president of Traders Association, Sector 17 condoled the death of the victim. He urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to look into the law and order of the country and implement such strong laws that will punish such culprits without any delay.

The Chandigarh Press Club has cancelled its New Year's eve celebrations in wake of the incident. A candle lighting ceremony will be held in the club premises on Monday evening.

A number of hotels that are part of the Chandigarh Hospitality Association have canceled their New Year's eve celebrations. CITCO hotels will also not be holding any celebrations. The association has appealed for a sombre new year.

The members of Chandigarh Citizen's Forum held a silent protest at the Garden of Silence at Sukhna Lake.
