In a second case this week, a newborn boy was found abandoned at a bus stop near Government College in Sector 11 late last night.
The infant, barely three days old, was rushed to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16.
A case of abandoning the newborn under Section 317 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector-11 police station. The boy was found at the bus stop by a Class IV employee of the college. The infant was wrapped in a blanket and was weeping when it was noticed, the police said. The case has been registered on the complaint of Surat Singh, the employee who saw the infant and alerted the police.
Meanwhile, mystery continues to shroud the recovery of the body of a dead infant from a trash bin at the Gynecology OPD in PGI on Thursday.
A police officer said rising illicit relations and sheer poverty are the reasons due to which infants are being abandoned in a large number the in city. Every year, five to seven of such cases are registered.
"We are investigating both the cases and it seems to be the handiwork of woman who may have abandoned her child owing to illicit relations or sheer poverty," said Inspector Sukhbir Rana, SHO, Sector-11 police station.
Only one woman arrested for abandoning newborn in 4 years
In the past four years, the Chandigarh Police have managed to arrest only one accused for abandoning a newborn. In 2006, the police had arrested Pooja, a Colony Number 5 resident, who had abandoned her newborn owing to her illicit relations.
