The Traffic Department organised a ceremony to felicitate the newly trained youth traffic brigade in the city on Monday. The brigade members will start handling traffic on city roads from August 6.
The new traffic brigade comprises 325 boys and 40 girls. The project to form the traffic brigade was planned to strengthen the work force of the Traffic Department,which is otherwise understaffed.
According to the Traffic Department,the brigade is an initiative of public-private partnership. The department officials said that the objective of the project is to sensitise locals about traffic discipline.
The brigade that comprises students and salaried persons from different occupations in the age group of 18 to 35 years has been given blue and white uniform along with a sash displaying the tag Traffic Brigade.
The members of the brigade will be paid Rs 120 per day as allowance. They will perform eight hours of duty under the supervision of senior traffic policemen.
M M Anarwala,Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic),said: The candidates are very excited about their jobs. They underwent training for six weeks. Our expert trainers trained them in all aspects of road safety,road management,signage and techniques of handling different traffic equipment.
O P Mathur,former Commissioner of Police,Ahmedabad,was present to felicitate the candidates. The current Commissioner of Police,S K Saikia,was also present at the event along with senior officers of the Traffic Department in Ahmedabad.
