NH a garbage dump, rains make matters worse

The recent rains have once again exposed the flaws in the waste disposal system of the city. The Ferozpur Road, which serves as the city's highway, is giving a harrowing time to commuters, all courtesy the foul smell emanating from the heaps of garbage lying in the open.

And all this, when parts of the city are under the grip of gastroenteritis. The Municipal Corporation workers, meanwhile, seem to be unaware of the situation, as no one comes to clean up the mess for days at end. Hira Lal, a potter, says, "I have been sitting here daily for the last three years and the condition has been same. Sometimes when the collecting crane does not come from two to three consecutive days, it becomes impossible to sit here due to the foul smell."

Om Beer, who works as a sweeper for the colony near the site, says, "The garbage collected from Rajguru Nagar, Aggar Nagar and BRS Nagar is dumped here on the main road. The MC has told us to bring the garbage here only. The collecting crane should come daily but it doesn't. Even if it misses a single day, the place turns into a complete mess and it becomes impossible to stand here for even a second."

With gastroenteritis already claiming two lives in the city, it the time for the Municipal Corporation to take some action. What adds to the nuisance is that the collection points are not even covered and walls that were built to cover the garbage were reduced to debris within no time.

MC Health Officer Charanjeet Uppal, when asked about the garbage disposal policy of the city, had something interesting to say. "The garbage is collected daily but sometimes the crane does not work or there are heavy rains. Moreover, the garbage is there in the whole city so it will anyhow produce foul smell," he says.
