After a hiatus of a few weeks, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded three road projects worth Rs 4,000 crore. The contract awarding agency for the government signed three concession agreements for 4/6-laning nearly 244 km of highways on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis today. NHAI,which has been restructuring projects to bring down their cost and make them attractive to private players, has also agreed on a grant of about Rs 780 crore for two of these three projects.
NHAI had managed to award about eight projects last year against a target of over 60 on account of cost escalation due to high inflation and confusion over the model concession agreement. As of now,the NHAI plans to award roughly 35 projects this year along with those pending from fiscal 2008-09.
The first has been awarded to the Isolux-Soma Consortium. It involves the 4-6 laning of 133 km of national highways of Gujarat/Maharashtra Border-Surat-Hazira Port. The total project cost is Rs 1,509 crore. The agreement involves a grant of Rs 556 crore to the concessionaire and the concession period is 19 years, including a 30-month construction period.
In addition,NHAI has awarded the 4-laning of the Pune-Solapur section of NH-9 in Maharashtra on BOT basis. The concessionaire for the project is Navinya Buildcon and Atlantia SPA. The length of the project is about 110 km and the total project cost is Rs 1,110 crore. The agreement involves a grant of Rs 299 crore. The concession period is 21 years, including 910 days for construction. The project will have bridges,fly-overs,vehicular under passes, pedestrians under passes, truck lay-byes etc. There will be a 124 km long service road on both sides of the project.
The third project includes six-laning of 93 km long Kishangarh-Beawar Section of NH-8. The project has also been awarded to Soma Isolux Kishangarh Beawar Tollway. The project cost is estimated to be Rs 795 crore and the concession period is 18 years including construction period of 910 days. Apart from 8 fly overs and 4 road over bridges (ROBs),the highway will have a 57 km slip road. The project is a part of the National Highways Development Programme Phase III.
