A day after a radio exploded in the house of a bus conductor in Kaij taluka in Beed, injuring him and three of his family members, the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) are probing whether any explosives were kept in the device.

On Thursday, Om Nimbalkar, a bus conductor with Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), had found a packet containing a radio and three battery cells.

Beed Superintendent of Police Dattatray Mandlik said, "Nimbalkar took the package home and opened it. He put in the cells and switched on the radio. There was a large explosion. Nimbalkar, his wife Usha and two children were seriously injured. We have sent samples of the remnants of the radio to the forensic lab to test whether it contained any explosive. ATS and NIA teams are probing the case."

A senior ATS officer said, "At this point, we cannot say whether an Improvised Explosive Device was involved. We are awaiting the forensic report."

An expert from CRPF's Institute of IED Management said, "It is unlikely that a radio set will cause such an explosion. There is no component in a transistor radio that can cause an explosion this large. There have been instances of radio sets being used as a guise for IEDs."
