NID entrance test: Maths questions puzzle candidates

Many of the candidates who took the entrance test for National Institute of Design (NID) on Sunday were puzzled to see a number of mathematics questions, which they said were not mentioned in the sample paper on the institute’s website.

A candidate of the graduate diploma course in Communication Design said he left the questions pertaining to numerals because he did not want to waste time on them as he was weak in mathematics.

He said the sample papers obtained from the NID website prior to the exam did not cover any mathematics questions. But the actual question paper had questions relating to geometry, simplification and sequence.

Another candidate who appeared for the Graphic Design course said “My paper was pretty bad. I couldn’t solve the mathematics questions.”

NID Registrar Vijaya Deshmukh, however, said the questions were not mathematics, but numericals to test general mental ability. She said such questions were also included in the last two entrance exams.

“They were 10 or 15 mark questions to test general mental ability of andidates. All were related to design, they were not algebra questions like addition or subtraction,” Deshmukh said, adding,“It is possible that those who did not see question papers of the last two years were not aware of the question paper format.”
