Nine horses to add strength to UT mounted police

In order to increase the strength of the mounted police force, the UT police bought nine horses on Thursday. Also, the 22 horses that were being trained in Phillaur have returned to the city. A total of 36 trained horses will march during the Republic Day parade.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Suman Kumar said, "Two of the nine horses are of Indian origin, Marwaris, while the other seven are thorough bred. These horses are very costly, but we bargained, and bought all the nine horses for Rs 13 lakh."

The biggest attraction of all the nine horses is a black horse. "For the first time we bought a black horse. These are much in demand," the DSP added.

"We had been searching for the horses for the past one month. We finally bought the horses from Punjab. Now, we have 10 vacant posts for the mounted police," Kumar said.

The new horses, aged between four and five years, will undergo training for about eight months. "Usually we send the horses for training to Phillaur, but this time we plan to get trainers here. I will be sending a proposal to the senior officers. And if they approve of it, the nine horses will be trained here," Kumar further said.

He also added that training of the horses in the city will save time and money. The UT police also got the proposal to buy a horse wagon approved.
