A nine-year-old girl and a physically challenged woman were killed when a fire broke out in a slum cluster in Nawada village in Noida on Friday morning. The victims have been identified as Pooja (9) and Parul (65). Around 25 shanties were gutted in the blaze that lasted close to an hour. Fire personnel said six fire engines were pressed into service to douse the flames. Officials said an LPG cylinder exploded in one of the shanties, which triggered the fire. Officials said, "Pooja was at home with her grandmother, who is mute, while her father Dinesh, who is a rickshaw-puller, was away at work. While her grandmother escaped in time, Pooja was trapped inside. Parul, who was physically handicapped, was alone at home and could not escape in time. There were no other casualties, as people rushed out when they heard the cylinder explode," said a fire official.
