Nirupam under fire for ‘insult’ to Irani, party says it’s wrong

The Congress Friday disapproved of its MP Sanjay Nirupam allegedly insulting BJP MP Smriti Irani during a TV debate but the Lok Sabha MP from Mumbai remained defiant and sought to defend his controversial remarks.

During a TV debate on Thursday, Nirupam had reportedly told the actor-turned-politician, "Till some time ago you were dancing on TV screens and now you have become a psephologist".

Taking strong objection to Nirupam's "indecent" remarks, the BJP has decided to boycott him during TV debates. The party also demanded that Congress president Sonia Gandhi take action against Nirupam and apologise herself. Irani has decided to send Nirupam a legal notice.

"This is very regretful if it has happened. I will try to talk to Sanjay Nirupam but I don't think it is nice to talk about any person in a way that is derogatory. To say such a thing is unfortunate. It is this mindset, which we have to fight," AICC spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary said.

But Nirupam told The Indian Express that Irani had also used defamatory language against him during the TV debate.

"Smriti Irani things taken out of context...people have to see the full debate and understand the context. Smriti Irani defended Narendra Modi and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi when they made highly derogatory n demeaning statements against women n Sunanda Tharoor. Let them apologise and I will follow," Nirupam tweeted.
