Abdul Samad Mohammed Zarar, arrested in a case in an arms dealing case and a “suspect” in the Pune German Bakery blast — the Maharashtra ATS has been making enquiries in his hometown Bhatkal to learn where he was on February 13,the day of the blast — was on Tuesday remanded in 14-day judicial custody by a Mazgaon Metropolitan Magistrate’s court.

Magistrate M V Morale said,“After going through the remand application and the seriousness of the case,it doesn’t seem safe to let the accused out on bail….”

His police custody ended on Tuesday. Seeking judicial custody, the ATS team said he was not co-operating with the investigation, but added,“we (ATS) do not need his custody as of now so he may be sent to judicial custody…if needed,we will take his custody later.”

His lawyer Mobin Solkar claimed,“We will move the sessions court only after getting a copy of the court order. The investigating team did not have even a jot of evidence to book him… He was picked up in connection with another case (Pune German Bakery blast),as a suspect. Now,they (ATS) aren’t able to bring in any evidence against him.”

Solkar confirmed his client “had been questioned by the ATS on his whereabouts on February 13”.

Abdul Samad’s uncle Yakub Shamshuddin, speaking from Bhatkal, said,“We left for Bangalore in a Karnataka State Road Transport Volvo at 9 pm on February 13 from Bhatkal and reached Bangalore at 7.30 am on February 14 and went to Isnu Bhavan,a lodge. Though the lodge register says ‘Yakub Shamshuddin plus one’,the staff at the lodge can say that they saw me and Abdul.”

He said they left for Bhatkal in a cargo bus,Mokashi Express,on February 15 night and reached Bhatkal the next morning. “We showed receipts of the lodge and the bus tickets to the team which came to inquire…”
