  • Sara Alvi let out a sigh of relief as she watched Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal announce on television that Board examinations for Class X need to be scrapped. Pressure to perform had begun for the Class IX student a year ago.

Weak in Maths, Alvi, of Khalsa School in Chandni Chowk, had nightmares about failing in the subject. “I don’t understand Maths,” she said, “but thankfully, the Boards will now be done away with. I can then choose subjects other than Maths in classes XI and XII.”

Sibal has also proposed a system of percentiles, rather than percentages, should be put in place.

However, reactions from school principals and educationists have been varied.

Raziya Begum, principal of Zeenat Mahal School in Zafrabad, said the move would go a long way in reforming the education system and moving it towards a quality-based approach. D K Tiwari, secretary of the Delhi Government School Teachers Association, said Sibal’s proposal could also curb the dropout rate among students who might quit after faring poorly in the Class X Boards.

    Confusion galore
Several principals are, meanwhile, confused over Sibal’s proposal for schools’ autonomy in implementing the percentile system, as is present in the west.

“The minister has not made a clear-cut policy on how much autonomy the schools will have,” said Vandana Puri, principal of Salwan Public School, Karol Bagh. “He did not say who will give percentiles to students — the CBSE or schools?”

A public school principal, who did not wish to be named, said: “We cannot blindly follow the western countries. We need the infrastructure to serve an alternative system,”

Another suggestion from Sibal — to leave it to students to decide the stream they want to pursue after Class X — also came in for criticism. Principals said a student’s choice can’t be the only factor in determining admissions due to the tough competition and limited seats available in coveted streams.

“There is a rat race for certain streams among students,” Puri said. “Children do not know their aptitude at such a young age, and this is where a school’s decision to put them in different streams comes in.”

Springdales School, Pusa Road, principal Amita Mulla Wattal said while Sibal has made the announcement, there needs to be a serious dialogue with principals and educationists before a policyis devised.

10th Board Examinations arent a burden to studentsBy: Suma | 26-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward I am not an educationist. However I would like to express 10th exams must be continued.Students learn to work hard young, putting in additional effort in studies and get to learn the fundamentals of all subjects, whether it is Science, Maths, Social Studies. With the board exams, a student learns to prepare to face life and to become competitive.I agree that many students fail in the exams, and many dropout from schools. That doesnt mean that we must do away with examinations.Schools must be instructed to follow the subjects, text books prescribed by the boards. Probably the boards can put a restriction to the number of note-books the students have to carry to school. Even in software companies, exams are conducted, if an employee has to survive in the company he must pass the various certifications that are made compulsory,so why shouldnt we do away with even these certifications.I fear that with this decision many of the children would become useless and not be able to do any work.
