  • Leaders of the NCP called off a crucial meeting with Congress leaders at Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s official residence on Sunday evening over the issue of portfolio sharing in Maharashtra, delaying further government formation in the state.

Maharashtra PCC president Manikrao Thakre and Mumbai unit chief Kripashankar Singh were present at the CM’s residence for the meeting when they were told that NCP leaders won’t be coming.

When contacted, Thakre said the NCP leaders informed him that they were yet to conclude their internal deliberations on the issue of portfolio sharing. “We will wait for them,” Thakre said. Initially the talks were to be held in Delhi, but were later shifted.

Earlier in the day, NCP’s chief negotiator Praful Patel met his party chief Sharad Pawar and then went to ‘Varsha’, the CM’s residence, to meet Chavan’s spiritual guru Satya Sai Baba, who was present there.

Both parties are stuck over portfolio sharing with the Congress offering 18 ministerial berths to the NCP while retaining 24 for itself, a change from the 20-22 formula in the outgoing government.

The major portfolio of dispute between the two parties is the Home Ministry, which controls the law and order in the state. Over the decade- long alliance, the NCP has retained the ministry while the CM’s post went to the Congress.

The Congress won 82 seats while the NCP won 62 seats, changing the equations between the two parties since the last elections. In the 2004 elections, NCP had won more seats than the Congress.

THEY MUST MAKE UP THEIR MIND QUICKLYBy: Anand | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The Congress-NCP combine must fast make up their mind and install a Government at the earliest. As it is, the State is facing considering instabiity and that too after delivering a decisive mandate. However, fighting over the loaves and fishes of office, a Government is yet to be formed and the fight over portfolios is taking a rather ugly turn. This only shows the scant disregard the politicians have for the people of this Country. Whether it is in Karnataka or Maharasthara, politicians are one and the same little bothering about the plight of the commoners.
Maharashtra DramaBy: Anil Gupta | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sir, If Congress NCP fail to form the government by Nov 3, the alternative be explored by the Governor.Under the circumstances Ajit Pawar should seriously consider the alleged offer of CMship by the BJP-Shiv Sena combine. Sharad Pawar too should endorse such an arrangement.
NCP-CONGRESS allianceBy: MOHAN DADDIKAR | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The firmness now being shown by NCP about retaining certain important portfolios in Maharashtra cabinet will not last long, because Sharad Pawar knows that his political clout even in Maharastra has come to an end and his only purpose in continuing in politics is to ensure bright and secure political career for his daughter and this can be be achieved only by being in good books with Sonia Gandhi, Besides,non-cooperation with the Congress at state level will result in loosing two important and profitable minsistries (Agriculture and Aviation) at the centre. This is a too heavy price for retaining home ministry in Maharashtra cabinet!
SattaBy: Ravi | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward First, they fight the oppositions in the elections, then the allies among themselves, and then within party for better portfolios.
Tussle for Ministeries between the Congress party and the NCPBy: Rajesh Vyas | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I (AND I AM SURE THERE ARE MANY OTHERS LIKE ME) fail to understand the tussle for Portfolios between the Mighty Congress Party and the much decimated NCP. Apparently, there is more than what meets the eyes of us common folks (I AM SURE THE POLITICIANS CONSIDER US STUPID AND MORONIC). In a Democracy, my understanding is, the MLAs and the MPs are there to serve the people. Why should a particular Ministry make any difference as all Ministeries are to serve the people of the state and I presume all the Ministeries are equally important. The tussle for Portfolios is evidently for more than servicing the people of the state. It appears that some ministries are more lucrative (OF COURSE IN MONEY TERMS AND FOR BARGAINING) than some others for the Ministers and their respective parties. The PRINCIPLE of serving the people goes out of the window. The common man has to fend for himself while the Ministers are only politicking to suit their own personal Agendas. !!!!!SOME DEMOCRACY WE HAVE!!!
