  • A proposal for the CRPF’s redeployment in trouble-torn Nandigram was on Saturday turned down by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, who instead asked the police and local administration to play a more active role in restoring peace in the area.

The CRPF was deployed in Nandigram due to a particular situation and now the situation did not exist, Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakraborty told reporters after an all-party meeting on the issue.

Bhattacharjee told the meeting, which was boycotted by main opposition Trinamool Congress and Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), that Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR) and the state police were competent to deal with the situation in Nandigram, Chakraborty said.
