The residents of this town have decided to boycott polls. Their grouse is lack of development in the last decade. “The residents of the area have decided not to vote for anyone. We have had enough of false promises in lieu of votes,” said Gurpreet Singh,a cloth merchant and resident of Manveer Basti.

“The streets are clogged with dirty water and it is hard to enter our homes. There is a lot of stench and we have to cover our nose as we enter. When we approach the municipal committee they say they do not have funds. There is only one street light on 300 feet stretch,” he added.

The anger is evident among everyone. Karam Singh,a tailor and resident of Model Town said,“ There are no roads or sewerage system and no one listens to our problems. Our MLA and municipal chief are from the Congress and they blame the SAD for not supporting the development works in the area. It should be renamed as Model Down.”

“The government helps only those who have some political connections. We have to find different channels to get our work done,” said Harjit Singh, another residents. The residents are paying no attention to the campaigning. Paramjit Kaur’s convoy received a squib response and no one was present at the inauguration of her party office.
