The stalemate at Visva-Bharati University continues with the teachers, non-teaching staff and students not backing off from their demands for a CBI inquiry into allegation against Vice-Chancellor Rajat Kanta Ray.
“We demand a CBI probe into the charges levelled against the Vice-Chancellor. We are not protesting against any pay hike. From tomorrow, students are supposed to join us,” said Kishore Bhattacharya, the president of Teachers Association of the university. The representatives of the teachers’ association have written to the Chancellor of the university, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the rector of the university Gopalkrishna Gandhi and the Union HRD ministry to initiate inquiry against the Vice-Chancellor.
The Karmchari Sabha (employees association) of the university has also voiced similar protests on the issue. According to the association, the charges of corruption involve giving appointments to his close relatives, approving medical bills worth Rs 10 lakh in his name and staying away from the university for a long period.
Gagan Sarkar, the president of employees association, said the protests which started on Friday will continue unless the V-C is asked to quit.
The spokesperson of the university, Amitava Chowdhury, on Saturday pointed out that a committee headed by registrar M M Mitra of the university will inquire into the charges. But both the teachers’ association and employees’ association rejected it by saying there was no provision of having such a committee in the university statute and they want an external inquiry.
