After months of delays, the metro will finally chug into Ghaziabad on July 14 connecting the satellite city to the Capital. Following an inspection by the Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety on Tuesday morning, the Delhi Metro plans to throw the line open to the public on Thursday at 7 am.
However, the line will not have a ceremonial flagging off by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati as was speculated earlier and the two new stations at Kaushambi and Vaishali will just be made operational on Thursday morning. The first train from Anand Vihar and Vaishali will leave at 7 am on Thursday while from Friday, trains will ply from the normal operational hours of 6 am.
The CMRS,R K Kardam, inspected the 2.5 km elevated stretch from Anand Vihar to Vaishali on Tuesday. We propose to open this section for commercial operations for the public from July 14. However, from July 15,the train services will start at 6 am from Vaishali metro station and the last train from Vaishali will leave at 11 pm for going towards Dwarka, said an official spokesperson of Delhi Metro.
Spread over a total plot area of 15,790 sqm,the Vaishali metro station will be the highlight of the corridor. The facade and interiors of the premises will also feature art work.
The Delhi Metro has also planned segregated vehicular and pedestrian movement with separate pick-and-drop bays for para-transport and integration with the main road. The nearby Sahibabad industrial area will also be connected through a foot overbridge
The line is delayed by over nine months and was slated to be opened during the Commonwealth Games. As per the MoU signed between the DMRC and the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) in March 2008,the line was to be completed within 30 months. Several issues, including shifting of high tension power transmission lines and transfer of land had thrown the project off its schedule.
The 2.57-km line was included in Delhi Metros Phase II project as part of an extension of the Indraprastha-Yamuna Bank-Anand Vihar ISBT corridor. A sanction of Rs 260 crore was made for the stretch.
