No Nashik Fest this year, fund to be spent on water project

The city won't see its annual 'Nashik Festival' this year. The fund earmarked for the event will be used for tackling water scarcity in this north Maharashtra district.

City-based Bhujbal Foundation, which organises fest, said mega event would not be organised this year and fund would be spent on a water conservation project, which was launched on Monday. Local NCP leader and MP Sameer Bhujbal and trustees of the foundation inaugurated the scheme in Suregaon village in drought-prone Sinnar taluka.

Removing silt from lakes and percolation tanks, deepening them and repair of weirs would be carried out in the first phase, covering 99 places, Bhujbal said. Work under 'pani adava, pani jirva' (stop rainwater and allow it to percolate) has been undertaken in Sinnar taluka.

The NCP leader said work on removal of sediments from Shivnadi and Devnadi rivers, repair of weirs and creation of new ones was also being undertaken.
