Defence Minister AK Antony has ruled out the use of army against the naxals.

Defence Minister A K Antony on Monday ruled out the use of Army against Maoists but said violence perpetrated by them would be dealt with firmly.

"The army is the last resort in internal security measures and the government does not intend to use it against Maoist activities," he told reporters here.

He said law and order was mainly a state subject, but the Centre was prepared to extend any support, including providing paramilitary forces to deal with any internal security problem.

The role of defence forces was different and the Army would be the last resort in settling problems in states, he said. Maoists have been operating in states like West Bengal, Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand and their ideology of violence would be dealt with firmly, Antony said.

"No one including Maoists, will be allowed to take law into their own hands," Antony said.

On China's claims over Arunachal Pradesh, he said India had repeatedly stated that the North Eastern state was an integral part of the country. "Arunachal Pradesh is part of India, just like Kerala," he said.

To a question on the threat to Tamil Nadu fishermen along the Palk Straits, who often report attacks by Sri Lankan Navy, he said the Navy, Coast Guard and Tamil Nadu police were "alert on the issue."

Big nation, bigger problems and By: Mani Ramachandran | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The army is the last resort in internal security measures ... What is the definition of last resort? Do they have to kill more people or destroy more public property. No one including Maoists, will be allowed to take law into their own hands True. But what will the govt. do if some one takes law and order in their hands. The govt neither have a clear policy nor balls to handle hard issues. The problems India face are much bigger than its leaders.Big Nation, Bigger problems and the smallest leaders.
No plan for army in Maost CaseBy: Rajendra M. Parikh, Arlington, Texas USA | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Readers,The Indian Government is too soft and naive. Maosts and Naxals are thugs and murderers. What proof is required. They should be rounded up and put them in a labor camp to fix all the public properties they have destroyed. The violence with lethal and unauthorized weapons must beconfiscated by brutal force. A thorn must be removed by another thorn. They can not be allowed tale law into theirhands. They are Indian citizens, that is fact, that does not meanthey roam with guns and kill innocent people.Poverty that does not mean that they ask justice on a gunpoint. The system is in place, they should go to school andget education and then earn respect.Which company would like to invest in a state where thereis violence everywhere?God bless India and her armed forces.Thank you and sincerely,Rajendra M. Can't be a soft state in face of terrorismBy: BP | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The cowardly government and Antony are wrong on this one. The Maoist situation is no longer a simple law and order problem. These anti-state terrorists have killed thousands of innocents and destroyed billions of rupees worth of public and private properties. As simple police action has not worked for the past two decades, it is time to use the army as the Maoists have declared war on the state and have a stated aim of toppling the democratic order of the country and impose their own fascist Maoist ideology through force. Further, these Maoist traitors are supported by the external actors (china and pakistan) and thus are proxies for foreign powers who want to destabilize India. It is time to let the army and the air force loose on these traitors and protect the innocent citizen.
antoney and naxalsBy: birbell | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward mr. antoney you and your are children are safe and protected so you don.t need to worry. if you say the role of military is different why are they deployed in flood releif etc. only when your children taken as captive or injured in their attack you will act it seems. why you are blaming the state govts. if the maoist, naxal problems have to do some thing with social injustice what is your party and the govt. do for that.stop this nonsense and act either to talk to them and solve the problems or take stern action by military and para forces. as the menace is spreading from north to south you cannot just say is a state govt. problem. it is national problem which the centre has to act without further delay. or else it would be worse than what pakistan is facing with the taliban.an inaction is defenitly allowing their growth and strength directly or indirectly.so wakeup mr. clean.mr. chidambaram either you talk to them or take action. don't try to show as a moderator.
