  • Staying firm on her demand, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said no project will be allowed in Singur unless 400 acres is returned to farmers, hours after a BHEL team visited the site for setting up a power plant.

"We have said earlier and want to make it clear that no project would be allowed at Singur unless the 400 acres of land is returned back to the farmers," Mamata told reporters here.

She said this when asked for her reaction on the BHEL team visiting the site for setting up a power plant.

BHEL sources earlier on Thursday said in Kolkata that they visited the site in connection with the setting up of a power plant after the request was made by the state owned PSU, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd (WBPDCL).

Banerjee said railways had also received similar proposals from the BHEL and the "letters were with her".

"But our stand remains unchanged. Return the extra land (400 acres) to farmer and set up the plant at 600 acres only," she said adding "railway is even eager to set up a coach factory there but we will stand by our principles."

On her meeting with Sam Pitroda, who is heading a railway committee on use of ICT for railways, Banerjee said they discussed various proposals that the committee has come up with.

"His ideas are good and if implemented, it would generate revenue for the Railways," she said.

Take this year, Return next year?By: Deepak | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Dear Mr. Katyal, What is your actual stand? 1) Provide industrial development and thus providing jobs (in the first sentence) or 2)return the land (in the fifth sentence)? Please don't put your feet on two boats. My opinion is that as the land is already taken up giving compensation (spending money from the exchequer) it should be utilized for any other project.
No Project in Singur till land returnedBy: Shadi Katyal | 13-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward India is blessed with self riotous leaders and instead of industrial development and thus providing jobs, they only worry about their being in power. How is this Minister any different than others and she did take part in closing of NANO plant. There is no difference between her and other Communists. Let people stay poor and thus stay in power. TATA is already have NANO in the market and than why is this land not been returned, presume the money paid for is already gone. What stopped the return? The politics of exploiting the poor
