Political violence has continued in Bengal even after the results as clashes between supporters of the Left Front and the Trinamool-SUCI combine were reported on Sunday. Till now, 19 people have been killed in poll-related violence in the state.
A four-year-old girl Sanjita Ari was among five persons injured when police lathi-charged Trinamool supporters in Kajrabar near Nandigram.
Police said they had to resort to lathi-charge when Trinamool supporters prevented them from conducting a raid at the residence of a party worker Prashanta Pramanik and pelted stones on the police team. We have received a tip off that illegal arms were stocked in his house, said the police.
In another incident, at the Nandigram-Khejuri border, women gheraoed a police camp for hours. The blockade was not lifted till late evening despite assurances from SP Pallab Kanti Ghosh.
CPM leaders said several party offices in Haldia and Nandigram have been damaged since last night after Trinamool supporters stoned the offices. In Mecheda, two vehicles belonging to party supporters were burnt, said a CPM leader.
In Joynagar Lok Sabha constituency, where SUCI candidate Tarun Mondal won, violence was reported from several areas. Both the CPM and the Trinamool-SUCI blamed each other.
“The SUCI targeted our people all day today. They have been taking
out victory rallies, assaulting our supporters along the way,” CPM Joynagar-Kulti zonal committee member Arun Ghosh said.
He said SUCI supporters had set two houses on fire and attacked Left supporters with bombs in Baishada in the Ghosherchak area during a rally.
