  • The government said on Saturday that creating more jobs, not reservation, is needed for the uplift of weaker sections of society.

"I am not a great votary of reservation. I don't believe reservation is the answer for the future," Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said in New Delhi at a function organised by industry body Confederation of Indian Industry.

The minister, who is also holding the charge of the Corporate Affairs Ministry, said that empowerment and capacity building are the answers and not reservation.

The previous UPA government had asked the private sector to go for affirmative action in giving jobs to weaker sections as part of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Khurshid pointed out that the country can achieve equality effectively with affirmative action as it is a more smooth process, is accommodative and goes farther than reservations.

Khurshid said reservations played a very important role for the targeted population. "I think we should not whip this horse too much and now there are some wonderful opportunities available the world over and certainly in our own country in affirmative action," he added.

However, the minister made it clear that he is not the last word on job reservations in the private sector as there are many other people who have opinions while the government will have to take a view.

The matter will take shape in due course in the commission to be set up on equal opportunities. When asked about the salaries of company CEOs, Khurshid said it is for shareholders and the company to decide what is good for them.

ReservationBy: Krishnaswamy Balaji | 07-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Well spoken Khurshid! It is time to overcome the minorities by empowering them by education and not by weakening them with reservation. This sort of negative support will never allow them to standup of their own. Why Indians are doing well abroad, it is because, they have lived their life with such a great competition in India and they find it is very easy to score well in all fronts abroad. By reservation, you weaken them to survive outside your domain. If anybody who wants to advocate such reservations, they should ask themselves whay they have done from their side. AS Gandhi said, you be the change you wish to see around...So, support just only one boy or girl to get proper education (empowerment) and you see rest of things will fall automatically. All the best Minister ..
no reservationBy: sam | 07-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Reservation based on economic conditions based on past 3 years tax returns is ok within limits. Anything else is unacceptable
ResewrvationBy: Damodar P>Shetty | 07-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward at least one person spoke the truth and reality. It is not reservation but the creation of more employment is the need of the hour. Well said Khursid Sahib.
No NeedBy: Mohamed Mubeen | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward I am expressing here about my opinions of Weaker Sections of the Society as far as the Muslims are Concerned and not those of other religions.I agree with Mr.Khurshid when he says there should be more job created instead of reservation. Though I have reservation about reservation in Public Sector especially education, I am against reservation in Private Sector as a whole. Its time, we Muslims, realized that the world is getting competitive and complicated. And its the duty of each and every educated Muslim to educate others and thereby build a strong, vibrant and intelligent Islamic Community. If the Blacks in US had relied only upon reservation, I don't think we could have witnessed a Black rising to the position of a President.Let us all Muslims wake up and especially the educated ones and let us not forget our responsibility to Muslims and others and the entire Indian nation in building a strong, united Secular society.
Minority Appeasing GovtBy: Suchithra | 06-Jul-2009 Reply | Forward Great statement. But let us see how far this minority appeasing govt under Italian lady will allow to adhere to what Khurshid has said.Cong is thriving only on minority vote bank
