  • It’s a journey six women Nobel Peace laureates undertook three years ago when they formed the Nobel Women’s Initiative to fight for peace and justice in the world.

And they have taken the long, tedious route - of non-violent struggle and dialogue. They argue it hasn’t worked in Myanmar, where National Democratic League leader Aung San Suu Kyi is still under house arrest, or in Tibet — its spiritual leader Dalai Lama has spent 50 years in exile. Both have called for peaceful means, and reconciliation.

But it worked in South Africa, in Northern Ireland, they said.

“We are six of us. Our sister laureate Aung can’t be with us because she is under house arrest,” Nobel laureate Jody Williams said.

The two Nobel laureates, Williams and Mairead Maguire, were in Delhi on Thursday to talk about what they felt was the solution to the problems in Myanmar and Tibet, both regions where China has an interest.

With fellow laureate Shirin Ebadi, they were in Dharamshala earlier this week, where Dalai Lama had invited them to take up the cause of Tibet.

Ebadi, who was scheduled to be in Delhi for a press briefing, had to leave for Frankfurt on Wednesday.

“One refugee has told me people disappeared in his part of Tibet, and bodies floated in the river,” said Maguire, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976 along with her sister Betty Williams for their efforts to end sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

Jody Williams, who received the peace prize in 1997 for her work to ban landmines, said what gave them hope in the face of such atrocities were the lives of men like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

    ... contd.
