In an suspected case of honour killing,a 20-year-old customer service associate with Tech Mahindra in Noida was strangulated and then burnt to death, allegedly by her family members, for marrying secretly and out of her caste.
Sangeeta had secretly married Ravinder Kataria, whom she met while pursuing a computer course in Mayur Vihar in 2007,on February 15 this year. A resident of Sector 8 Noida,Sangeeta was a Gurjjar caste, while her husband was from the Jaatav community.
Sangeeta knew her family would never allow this relationship. So we got married in February this year in the presence of my father, said Kataria at the Sector 58 police station. However, both stayed on at their respective houses and used to meet after office hours. In April,Sangeetas family members told her that they had started looking for a groom for her. On April 30,she told her family about her marital status. After that she was confined to her home and prohibited from even making calls. She spoke to me just once after that, added Kataria.
On July 11,Sangeeta was able to come to the boys house, the police said, adding that Katarias father Devi Ram,however, asked the girl to go back to her house.
Meanwhile, after a family meeting, both families decided that she would come stay at the Kataria residence in Sector 66 from July 18. Sangeeta went back with her parents, but after that Kataria could not contact her. Her phone was out of reach and was later switched off. I suspected foul play, Kataria said, adding that he immediately lodged a complaint with the SSPs office.
According to the police,on July 13,Sangeetas family took her to their ancestral village in Bulandshahr. They strangled her and later set her on fire. They then spread the ashes in the fields and ran a tractor over it, said Gautam Buddha Nagar SSP Ashok K Singh. He stated the police have arrested Sangeetas mother Ramwati, aunt Jagwati, cousin Manoj, uncle Sukhbir and relative Dayaram in connection with the murder. A hunt is not to nab her father Beer Singh,he said.
