North Corpn’s panel fails to meet for want of members

For the first time in many years, a Standing Committee meeting had to be adjourned for want of members. Most of the members of the North corporation reportedly went to attend a BJP rally organised on Wednesday to protest against FDI in multi-brand retail.

Of the 12 members, the Standing Committee needs five members present to start the meeting. There were only four in attendance.

"It was our party's rally against corruption, FDI and land deals. Being party workers, it was our duty to attend the rally," one of the councillors said.

Mahesh Chand Sharma, BJP councillor, said, "In 2001, a Standing Committee meeting had to be adjourned for lack of members."

"This has never happened in the 11 years since I was elected a corporation councillor," Yogendra Chandolia, chairperson of the Standing Committee, North Municipal Corporation, said.

Leader of the Opposition Mukesh Goel said, "BJP councillors knew about the rally and they should have postponed the meeting if members were going to attend a rally. They have made a mockery of the Standing Committee," Goel said.
