The US and its allies slammed North Korea for launching a missile with President Barack Obama calling it a ‘provocative act’ in violation of Pyongyang's international obligations and vowing to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) through a strong global response.

"The launch today of a Taepodong-2 missile was a clear violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1718, which expressly prohibits North Korea from conducting ballistic missile-related activities of any kind," Obama, who is in Czech capital Prague, said in a statement.

"With this provocative act, North Korea has ignored its international obligations, rejected unequivocal calls for restraint, and further isolated itself from the community of nations," he said.

Later addressing a security conference, Obama said the time has come for a "strong international response" to the North Korean action.

"North Korea must know that the path to security and respect will never come through illegal weapons. All nations must come together to build a strong global regime. That's why we must stand shoulder-to-shoulder to pressure the North Koreans to change course," he said.

His remarks came after North Korea defied weeks of Western pressure and launched a long-range rocket, "successfully" placing a communications satellite in space.

N.Korea's gutsBy: Hero Vaz | 06-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward N.Korea's act may be provocative to US and even to Japan, but what is to be admired is their defiance and guts, which bigger countries don't demonstrate. The UN, of course, is a mere spectator that is incapable of taking any concrete action.
North Korea missile launchBy: Ven Sardi | 06-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward The argument of "Why one law for you, and one law for me" seems unassailable. and appeals to every country that is trying to modernize its arsenal. There has to be international unanimity, not consensus, if there is going to be any solution. Question is How are the nuclear nations going to demonstrate that they are different. By force? Ven Sardi
ChinaBy: sudhak | 06-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward Probably, either all or any one of the military chiness govt/pakistan/Iran govrements might be covertly backing up North Korean nuclear program. The military chinesse leadership is capabale of covertly doing this in the way, it supports pakistan program. It is known for its secrecy and cunningness. Iran openly defies USA/UN.Pakistan always cheated USA and will continue to cheat USA after grabbing its Funds.USA and Nato better from coialtion with Russia and India.Obama must understand that, always, not going for war is not in his hands and may be compelled to use force.
NORTH KOREABy: KRISHNA | 05-Apr-2009 Reply | Forward I THINK NORTH KOREA LIKE USA HAS THE RIGHT TO DFEND IT'S VALUES BY STRENGTHENING IT'S DEFENCE FROM AXIS OF EVIL WHICH IN MY VIEW POINT IS USA AGAINST COMMUNISM BY CAPITALISM
