Norway kids: Mother moves high court for custody

Sagarika Bhattacharjee on Thursday moved the Calcutta High Court to get custody of her two children, who are in the care of their uncle Arunabash Bhattacharjee at Kulti in Burdwan.

Avigyan and Aishwarya were separated from their parents Sagarika and Anurup Bhattacharjee according to the order of the Norwegian Child Welfare Services in May last year. In April this year, the children were brought to India and handed over to Arunabash.

Almost seven months ago, Sagarika approached the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Burdwan unit, to get back her children. The CWC conducted an inquiry and ordered that the two children be handed back to Sagarika.

Sagarika approached the police for implementation of the CWC order, but the police refused to comply with it. She then decided to file a writ petition in the high court.

On Thursday, advocate Samaraditya Pal moved the petition before Justice Dipankar Dutta. But no counsel of Arunabash appeared in the court. Hence, the court said it would hear the case next month.
