Ajmal Kasab,22,may have had a series of mood swings during the course of the trial,but when Judge M L Tahaliyani pronounced him proven guilty as charged on all 86 counts,he sat impassively,his head bowed. In the packed courtroom,Kasab was perhaps the only person who appeared unconcerned and unfazed,even disinterested,as the verdict was pronounced.

After an unassuming entry into the courtroom at 12.15 pm,clad in his usual white kurta-pyjama,Kasab sat with his head bowed and his hands in the lap. He did not look up or react when the judge summarised his role. He stood up quietly as the court explained the verdict to him in Hindi and then sat down when asked to,his former sense of humour and defiance absent.

“Tumhe Bharat ke khilaf jung chhedne aur aatanki hamle karne aur logon ka khoon karne ke liye doshi paaya gaya hai (You have been found guilty of waging war against India and committing acts of terror and of murder),” Judge Tahaliyani told him. The judge added: “Tumhari saza ki sunwayi kal hogi.” (Hearing on your punishment will be conducted tomorrow).

He was finally led out in silence.

On several occasions earlier,to the surprise of those in court,Kasab would at times laugh and cry during hearings. On other occasions,he had even dozed off.
