Not consulted,Akali councillors resign in protest

Five Municipal Corporation Delhi councillors from the Akali Dal resigned on Wednesday,the last day of filing nominations for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Five Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) councillors from the Akali Dal resigned on Wednesday,the last day of filing nominations for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor. They were protesting the fact that they had not been consulted before the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated councillor from Mukherjee Nagar Dr Rajni Abbi for the post of Mayor. The Akali Dal is an alliance partner of the BJP.

From the ruling BJP,dissident councillor Narain Singh also submitted his nomination. From the opposition Congress,Savita Sharma filed her nomination papers for the Mayor’s post.

For the post of Deputy Mayor,Anil Kumar Sharma of the BJP and N Raja of the Congress filed nomination papers.

The MCD has five councillors from Akali Dal. Manjinder Singh Sirsa,one of them,said: “We may be a very small group,but it does not mean we deserve no respect. Despite us being allies,the BJP has never consulted us before making decisions. This was the final insult,” he said.

Suman Kumar Gupta and Rekha Gupta of the BJP and Tulsi Ram Sablania of the Congress filed their nominations for the three vacant posts of members of the MCD Standing Committee.

The elections for the posts will be held at a meeting scheduled for next Wednesday.
