Not on a Sunday

  • It’s a day to laze around and catch up with friends, not to turn up for a rally. That’s the message Rajkot sent out to its politicians. Campaign all you like but not on a Sunday morning.

Congress MP Priya Dutt must be wishing she had got it before she made the trip from Mumabi to Gujarat to campaign for the Congress’s candidate from Rajkot-I, Jayesh Radadiya.

Dutt arrived at Canal Road around 10 am. Except for a few party leaders, there was hardly any one around to flag off this road show.

Dutt got on an open motorized rath and waved. Local party workers waved back. At 10.30 am, Priya’s rath entered Sorathiwadi. This wasn’t such a good idea since being a commercial centre, Sunday meant all shutters were down. Not that the turnout at Kevdawadi or Jungleswar was any better.

“We get only one Sunday. Can’t think of getting up to see a road show of any leader or even a star,” said Jitesh Lakani, a resident of Sorathiyawadi who had stepped out to get milk.

“Does the BJP or the Congress or any other party have anything new to say? No. Then why should we ruin our holiday for them? asks Mital Joshi, a resident of Kevdawadi.
