  • In order to keep a check on the crime graph, the Ludhiana police have initiated a unique move of crime-mapping, which may prove helpful in prevention and detection of various crimes. This unique move, christened “Crime-mapping” has been started in the areas under the jurisdiction of the Superintendent of Police (SP), City-II, in the first phase.

Under this, the police have got prepared a big map of the areas falling in the jurisdiction of SP City-II. “This map has been prepared with the help of the remote-sensing centre of the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), which have used their satellite services for preparing this map,” SP, City-II, Snehdeep Sharma told The Indian Express.

Sharma said that after preparing this map, the police have now identified various crime-prone areas and have tried to study the crime pattern therein.

“For example, in some areas mainly snatching incidents are taking place whereas in some areas house thefts are being reported. After studying the crime pattern of a particular area, we can focus our attention on that area and can also determine the reasons of the occurance of that particular crime there. For example if house thefts are being reported from a particular area during day time, one of the reasons could be that houses remained unattended during day time. In such cases we can work out the preventive measures,” said SP Sharma.

Similarly, the SP said that if some area was witnessing cases of snatchings, it means there were banks and other financial institutions in that area and thus the police patrolling in that area could be further increased. The SP said that the SSP, Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill was taking keen interest in the matter adding that the plan may be implemented in other areas of the city later on.
