To discourage pedestrians from crossing the busy Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, the concessionaire DSC Limited started a free bus ferry service between Shankar Chowk and IFFCO Chowk on Wednesday.
The move comes after the NHAI recently put median fencing on the Expressway on which several have died and over 50 injured while trying to rush through the fast moving traffic.
Under the bus ferry service, two low-floor buses will ply from 6 am till 11 pm.
According to an official of the DSC Limited, the service will be provided till a foot-over bridge or underpass is constructed.
Lack of facilities causes inconvenience to pedestrians since the Expressway cuts the city into two halves. The bus will ferry between 50 to 60 pedestrians at a time. We also have safety supervisors on board to help passengers while boarding and alighting, Sachin Sharma, vice president (operations),DSC Limited, said.
The District Magistrate of the area Deepti Umashankar said helping people cross the dangerous road was the most basic facility. It is one of the most basic facilities the concessionaire has provided. They have been asked to comply with safety norms, like putting up CCTV cameras and speedometers, and have ambulance and cranes in case of an emergency. This will be checked on fortnightly basis by a committee constituted by the district administration, Umashankar said.
