  • At its new landfill sites, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi plans to generate electricity, cooking gas, organic manure and bricks from the waste generated in the city. To come up at Okhla and Timarpur, the landfill sites will have a waste treatment plant for which the corporation is likely to join hands with the East Delhi

Waste Processing Company Private Limited (EDWPCL).

The MCD will collect the garbage and deposit it at the landfill sites, while the EDWPCL will recycle the waste. An estimated 1300 tonnes of garbage will be brought to these landfill sites daily.

The EDWPCL will produce electricity from mixed household waste, organic manure from green waste, the construction and demolition waste will be recycled to make bricks and the sewage waste will be turned into treated water.

The MCD and the EDWPCL will run the recycling plant on BOT (Built Operate and Transfer) basis, under which the company will be responsible for setting up and running the plant. It will also look after the maintenance of the plant, besides processing the residual waste.

“The MCD will only deposit the garbage to the landfill sites, while the agency will have to ensure that the final waste that reaches the landfill site is the residual inert matter and cannot be recycled any further. The corporation will only act like a monitoring agency to overlook at the project,” said MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta.

However, the EDWPCL will have the right to sell the products generated from the waste. According to the contract, the company can sell the electricity, cooking gas, residual treated water and other products generated from the waste, and the MCD will not interfere in the process.

    ... contd.
