Now,guidelines for Cong leaders visiting Dalits

Following criticism of the much-hyped visits by Congress leaders to Dalit households on Gandhi Jayanti, the state party unit has decided to formulate guidelines to be issued to district party heads to avoid such embarrassing situations in the future.

While the guidelines are being finalised,it is clear that there will be no more feasts, nor any invitations for media coverage in the future.

To make the visits productive,Congressmen will use the interaction to know the grievances of the Dalits and then work for their redressal.

State party president Rita Bahuguna Joshi has already announced that from November, all district presidents will be required to make at least one visit to a Dalit house every month and organise at least one chaupal in an underdeveloped region.

During these visits and chaupal, the leaders will listen to complaints regarding welfare schemes, especially those of the Central government — NREGS,mid-day meal scheme,Janani Suraksha Yojna,Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, etc.

Complaints regarding NREGS will be placed before the local development officer during “NREGA Divas” to be held on the first Wednesday of every month. Other complaints will be placed before local officers during the “Tehsil Divas”,which is held on the first and third Tuesday of every month.

Speaking to The Indian Express,Joshi said: “We are developing the plan and fine-tuning it. A deadline will be set for local development officers and if the complaints are not redressed within the scheduled time, then our district units will take up the issue by organising dharnas.”
