A day after courting controversy by opposing death penalty for rapists, the Haryana Khaps on Monday said instead of amending laws circumstances should be created so that those accused of committing sexual offences are forced to commit suicide.
Sube Singh, a Khap leader in Hisar, Monday said amending the law and introducing death penalty for the rapists can also lead to negative consequences.
"If the offence of rape is punished with death penalty in a blanket manner, it is bound to be misused.
Many cases have come to light where legal provisions have been used to settle scores or falsely implicate people," Sube Singh said
The Khap leader said that the lawmakers "should not get carried away with the Delhi gangrape incident" and amend the existing punishment laws in rape cases.
"The incident is definitely of a very serious nature...but as far as punishment for rape is concerned, the existing laws are perfect. At the best, the government should make laws that the rapists should be socially boycotted, not only by the society but by their parents also," he said.
Further negating the need of a death penalty, Sube Singh added, "Why hang the rapists? Create such circumstances, where the (accused) person hangs himself."
