After an award, a health insurance scheme and a channel after him, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi will soon have a post-graduate course based on his works.
Taking charge as the new vice-chancellor of University of Madras, G Thiruvasagam announced that the institution will offer MA courses in Periyar Thoughts, Anna Thoughts and Kalaignar (Karunanidhi) Thoughts. The courses, said officials at the V-C’s office, will commence from the next academic year.
As the V-C of Bharathiar University, Thiruvasagam had initiated translation of Karunanidhi’s works into English last year. There were also attempts to translate them to Chinese through a partner university.
This announcement came even as the proposal to name a bus stand after the Chief Minister’s parents drew flak from the opposition parties and ally Congress as well.
The efforts by DMK men at Radhapuram, Tirunelveli, led by local MLA Appavu to name the new government bus stand as ‘Muthuvelar-Anjugammal’ and erect a statue of the couple was opposed by Congress. According to them, the land where the bus stand has come up was known after former chief minister K Kamaraj, an icon for Congress supporters in Tamil Nadu.
As the issue spawned a controversy, the name was changed to Radhapuram bus stand. Karunanidhi said the demand to name it after his parents had come from the Radhapuram panchayat, a DMK-ruled local body.
