With advancements in medical technology, now one can preserve dental stem cells using dental stem cell banking to safeguard oneself from various ailments in the future.
Stem cell treatment is an interventional strategy that introduces new cells into damaged tissue in order to treat disease or injury. Once extracted, these stem cells are carefully preserved at a stem cell center in a special cryogenic storage facility, and retrieved when need may arise.
Stem cells are present in the tooth (dental pulp) and are found in baby teeth or milk teeth, that fall off between the ages of 5-12. They can also be collected for adolescents needing extraction of premolars while putting 'braces' and from adults when the wisdom teeth are extracted. The important thing is that the tooth has to be healthy when it is collected.
One such bank has been set up at the clinic of Dr Vinod Chandel in Chandigarh.
Dr Chandel said it costs Rs 1.2 lakh to deposit your dental stem cells for a period of 21 years.
